What I’m Playing, part 3
(Day One)
One of the games I’ve been waiting for is finally here!
Once I finally got home from work, I found that the game had finally unlocked and after my weekly reset meet up with my Destiny fire team, I logged in. After the title appeared, there was a beautiful and infinite star field that appeared on the screen and every so often one of them would have a name. After a few minutes of this and figuring out there was no on screen prompt, I pressed X and my journey began.
It spawned me on an ice planet that I would later name Hod after the Norse god of winter. The game has a very steep learning curve and doesn’t do much in the way of holding your hand. If you don’t like games where you have to do a lot of crafting and resource gathering, this probably is not a game for you. One of the first things you have to do is repair your ship after you spawned and it was a real time 8 minute walk across the area to gather an element that I needed to help me repair the engine. The terrain was randomly generated in front of me as I walked, and there were a couple of times that I had to use the jet pack to cross chasms that were randomly placed in front of me. Once I got enough of the element it was another 8 minute walk back to the ship. You can also use the ship to recharge your suit’s shields (but recharging the suit’s life support still needs to be done manually). During my walk there was a continuous update from the suit’s computer telling me the state of my life support system and my environmental shielding. I find its voice rather shrill but I guess I’ll get used to it.
Once I got the engines repaired, taking off and landing was easy to do. I discovered that I am in the Emerald Nebula once I got into orbit. From orbit, I could see 5 other planets but I didn’t go to any of them yet. I decided to go back down to Hod and explore some more before heading off world. Of the animals that I found there, there was one that looked like a cross between a stegosaurus and Godzilla though it was the height of my character. There were also things that looked like turtles that squealed when you got near them. I chased after one and got a prompt that I could feed it if I wanted to but decided to just leave it alone and continue gathering elements. I ran out of inventory space quickly but hopefully I can fix that or upgrade it later.
