Love, Lance
I don’t know what to feel right now beyond despondent. Went to the ResetEra Discord earlier to ask a question about a game to find that Lance Reddick had passed away this morning. He was 60.
Most people remember him from ‘The Wire’ and the John Wick films but I remember him first for the show ‘Fringe’ and subsequently for his role as Commander Zavala in Destiny 2. That aspect is why I decided to write this.
I was sort of ok with them killing off Cayde back in Forsaken. At the time I was livid but that anger was sated when Uldren was killed at the end of the expansion but I never really processed it myself. Sure, it was all tied up with a pretty bow at the end of the campaign, but I was left feeling like something was missing in the world. I still do.
Then Ikora was re-cast with a new voice actress and ever since that was pointed out to me, it’s bothered me. It’s Ikora still, but it’s not Ikora if that makes any sense. The actress does the part well but she’s not Ikora for me.
And now this. I don’t think that Bungie can work their way around this without totally killing Zavala off in the game. No other actor has the same distinct voice as Zavala.
With the release of Lightfall (I’ll be posting my thoughts on it at a later time) and all the changes that it brought, at this point I think I’m just going to ride it out until The Final Shape happens. I’ll see the Light versus Dark story arc to it’s completion and then bounce. This just isn’t the same game anymore and more often than not I just don’t think this game is for me anymore.
With Cayde gone, Ikora replaced and now Zavala in limbo until Bungie makes a statement about what they are going to do, the only character I’m really attached to at this point - and the only one that I think represents me - is Amanda Holliday. Country bumpkin that’s smart but underestimated at times. She’s really come into the spotlight during Season of Defiance but I doubt it will last.
I’m just ready for this game to end so I can move on, now more than ever. Eris Morn said it best: “we must bring an end to this suffering, one way or another.”
